| the 1984 Olympics | I would like to brag on my best friend during elementary school and junior high, Ruth Kleinsassar-Wysocki. As I sit here watching the 2000 Olympics, I am reminded that Ruth was in the 1984 Olympics at the colosseum in Los Angeles! She and Mary Decker-Slaney (sp?) were rivals throughout their running careers. They both started running as children, and competed against each other as they grew up. I am most proud of Ruth because her running never went to her head, even though she has been a national figure in the sport of track. When she ran her qualifying race for the 1500 or was it the 800 meters (?) she beat Mary Decker, which was a goal of her life. I am proud to say that Ruth not only represented the USA in the Olympics, she represented all of us from Azusa High. May we all remember where we started out our adult lives, and that is was a pretty great place to start, and that we can all accomplish great things if we put our minds to it!!! - Tracy Mayfield 1974 | |

They never spoke, but Fernando always had a crush on Patricia, but was too shy to lift his head to say hi. Fernando's family moved from East Los Angeles to Azusa and the two never saw each other again -- not even when both moved to West Covina as adults, living two miles apart. Reader's Digest magazine and classmates.com made it possible for them to get together again. And the happiest part: they were married on Oct. 31. So how did this happen? When the Esparza family moved from East Los Angeles to Azusa, Fernando gave Patricia a parting gift: a year's subscription to Reader's Digest. Being a young boy with no money of his own, he filled out a gift card at the bottom of his mother's subscription card. He eventually admitted to his mother that he was the culprit and he got into loads of trouble. The gift was not easy on Patricia, either. "My brother teased me about Fernando until I started crying," she said. "I hated him for liking me. I didn't like boys at that time." Thirty years pass. Fernando registered with classmates.com recently to get in touch with former schoolmates. Then in May, he got an e-mail from the little girl he liked in elementary school named Patricia -- and nearly fell out of his chair. Patricia said she wanted to thank him for the Reader's Digest, which she said was a precious gift. In fact, giving subscriptions to the magazine had become a family tradition. Could she, Patricia wrote, thank him in person? Fernando wrote her a long email explaining how much he really liked her back then. But, funny thing, he could not remember what gift she was talking about. Patricia promised when they met she would show it to him. That's when the two destined lovebirds found out that they lived only blocks from one another in West Covina. Patricia showed up at his door with a McDonald's meal and a copy of the Reader's Digest. From that moment on, the two have been inseparable. "I looked at those eyes and smile and I knew it was her," said Esparza. "That's who I'd been missing all these years." During their 30-year separation, Esparza joined the Air Force and eventually landed a job with the California Highway Patrol. Orena raised two children by herself; two kids who now both love Esparza. There have been noticeable changes in Fernando Esparza's appearance since he's fallen in love. He cut his long hair short and shaves regularly. He stopped drinking sodas and eating fast food, and lost 30 pounds. He even renewed his driver's license. As a joke, Patricia suggested to Fernando that since they were going to be in Las Vegas on Halloween to see a show, that they might as well just get married there. But after awhile, it sounded like a great idea. Especially if they dressed up in costume for the ceremony. The couple originally planned on getting married dressed as Frankenstein and the bride of Frankenstein. Their guests donned Halloween costumes for the wedding. But when they went shopping for their outfits, Patricia was distracted by a Renaissance gown in the store. It was a deep purple, satin and velvet, brocade-front Renaissance gown, and Patricia knew it was exactly right as her wedding gown. A complimentary chocolate-colored velveteen outfit with pleated sleeves and knicker pants fit Fernando to a T. "Patricia saw the dress on the mannequin and immmediately knew it was her dress," said Darlene Falzone, owner of A & A's Top Quality Costumes in Covina, and the designer of the Renaissance attire the couple chose. "They are two people who are very much in love and spent a lifetime looking for each other," Falzone said. "You hear about stories like this on TV or read about them in the paper," said Orona.
